Attaching Images to Markers
Article Reference NumberAA-00264

[NOTE:  Not applicable to users of HistoryGeo.com for Libraries]

When adding or editing a Custom Marker, you have the ability to attach images to illustrate something about the marker and its contents.  To attach an image, you must be in the process of creating a new marker (click here to learn about adding markers), or editing one of your existing markers (click here to learn how to edit markers).

Right now, the maximum number of images that can be attached to a single marker is 10.  If you wish to have more images than this, it would be a good idea to create an external image gallery and providing a link to it using a "Web Links" attachment.

There are two methods that you can use to attach images while adding/editing markers:  uploading new images to your account by clicking the "Upload New" button, or using images that you have already uploaded by clicking the "Attach Existing" button.

Click on one of the options below to learn more about the method you wish to use:

Editing or Detaching Images From a Marker

Notice the two buttons next to the image's entry in the attachment list.  One is for editing the caption and caption and description of the image, and one is for detaching the image from the current marker.

If you detach an image, it is not removed from your account and will still be accessible to you.

If you click to edit an image's caption and description, what you're really doing is overriding the original caption and description.

Your original caption and description will not be overwritten...just changed for this marker.  This is useful if you want to tailor the image's caption specifically to the current marker's contents.

Uploading New Images for Attachment

Start by clicking the "Upload New" button.  This will open the image uploader:

Click the "Upload File" button.  This will open a file browser where you can select images from your computer to upload.  Once you've selected an image, it will begin uploading to your account.

Once it has been successfully uploaded, the window will expand to reveal some fields you will need to fill out before you can use the newly-uploaded image in the HistoryGeo Viewer.

You will not be allowed to finish saving or attaching this image until you assign it a caption and description.  I's often helpful to explain where you got a particular image.  Use the "Source(s)" field to share this information.  If the image contains people whose names you know, be sure and include their surnames in the "Associated Surname(s)" field.

You may also wish to enter the image's date of origin if, for example,  you know when a specific photograph was taken.

You may either type in a date that follows the format "M/d/yyyy" which, if we were typing in November 12, 1987, would look like "11/12/1987," or you may click the little calendar icon to open up a date picker.

The date picker will, by default, show the current date.  To quickly navigate back to the date you wish to enter, start clicking by clicking the month and year listed at the top.  This will bring up a list of all the months of the current year.  If you click on the year at the top of the date picker, you will be shown a list of all the years within the current decade.  Now, start clicking the left arrow to go backwards in time by the decade.

Once you've hit the right decade, pick a year.  This will bring up the months for that year.  Click a month, and this will bring up the days for that month.

Click on a day, and the date picker will close, leaving you with a properly filled-in date in the "Date of Origin" box:

Once you've filled in all the information you want associated with your newly-uploaded image, click the "OK" button.  This will close the image uploader and return you to the add/edit marker window.  The image you just uploaded should be visible in the image attachment list.

Attaching Existing Images

To attach an image that you've already uploaded in the past, click the "Attach Existing" button.  This will open the "Attach Existing Image" window.

In the "Search your images" box, just start typing in words or letters that you know exist in the caption of the image you want to attach.  In the example below, only the letter "a" has been entered.  The second you start typing, you should see a list of corresponding images whose captions match the letters you've entered.

Select an image from this list to view its thumbnail and description.

Once you've selected the image you want to attach, click the "Attach Image" button.  This will close the "Attach Existing Image" window and return you to the add/edit marker window.  The image you just picked should be visible in the image attachment list.
